Kannada Matrimony: An Introduction to Kannada Rituals

Kannada, simply a language spoken by the people of Karnataka. This language has 44 million native speakers called Kannadigas. It is the official language of Karnataka. In this pooja, the groom is considered as the rebirth of lord Vishnu. Bride’s family worships him as well as the bride’s father clean the feet of groom before he steps into the Mandap.

  • Jaimala:

Entrance of bride into the Mandap and exchange of floral garland.

  • Dhareherdu:

It’s another name is Kanyadaan.

  • Saptapadi:

A marital knot is tied between the bride and groom’s attire and then couple takes seven rounds around the sacred fire.

Post-wedding rituals

The post-wedding rituals are:

  • Okhli:

The bride and groom’s families meet to play games of finding the ring in a vessel containing milk.

  • Vidaai:

It’s the time when the bride says goodbye to her family and go to in-laws house.

  • Gruh pravesh:

In this ritual, when the bride comes to In-laws house, she has to kick the Kalash full of rice with her right foot at the entrance of the house.

Kannada Wedding Attire:

A Kannada bride wears the best combination of red, golden and white sari with elaborate gold jewelry. Hairs are braided and decorated with flowers. The groom wears silk kurta or sherwanis with dhoti in south Indian style. The groom also wears white or orange turban and carries a stick in his right hand.
