Indian Muslim Matrimony – Islamic Marriage Rituals

Although a majority of the Islamic population had moved out of India during the partition, still, there are many Islamic people living in India. Since their tradition is not familiar with the majority of people, Muslim matrimony is always considered interesting to them. Along with the marriage rituals, their way of dissolving the marriage is also a different process. Talaq system is followed in Islam to end a marriage in which the husband recites the word Talaq three times in the Mosque where their marriage had happened. Once it’s said three times, they are divorced. However, the woman should not marry another person for the next 3 months. In this article, the strange but interesting traditions of the Islamic wedding and separation will be discussed.

Muslim wedding

Like all other wedding ceremonies, Islamic weddings also can be divided as the following three events.

·         Pre-wedding

·         Nikkah

·         Post-wedding

The pre-wedding ceremonies in Islam

·         The Mangni – This is the common engagement ceremony in which both the bride and the groom exchange rings and gifts.

·         Manjha or Mayun – Similar to the Hindu ritual of applying turmeric paste on the bride and groom, Manjha is adopted as a wedding ritual within the Muslim wedding practices in India and Pakistan.

·         Mehendi – The hands and fingers of the bride are decorated with the Mehendi with a design that somehow tells the groom’s name.

·         Sanchaq – On the final pre-wedding ritual, the groom’s family sends jewelry and clothes to the bride along with some gifts.

The wedding

On the wedding day, the couple goes to a Masjid/Mosque, and in the presence of Imam and the elderly of both the families, they are asked to agree to the marriage proposal by signing a register. This process is named Nikkah and that is what the real moment of marriage for Islam. After Nikkah both the groom and the bride are allowed to meet and see each other.

Post-wedding rituals

The post-wedding ceremony in Islam comprises of Rukhsati and Walimah in which the bride leaves her family and welcomed by her mother-in-law. She receives Quran as a gift from her mother-in-law. Then there will be a gathering of family members and friends where they enjoy and share gifts with the couple in Walimah ceremony.

Divorce and remarriage in Muslim Community

As said earlier, the Islamic divorcee is done by a Triple Talaq at the Mosque giving mutual consent. The man can immediately remarry some woman but the woman who got divorced should wait for the next 3 menstruation cycles to ensure that she is not pregnant and then only she can marry someone. Muslim second marriage has become common nowadays, as in the case of increasing divorce rates due to increasing economic independence throughout the world. Muslim divorcee brides can look out for Muslim grooms of their same community to remarry through various Islamic matrimony sites available online. If they have completed their 3 month waiting period after the divorce, they are free to remarry and are advised to do so to lead a good life in this modern-age society.
