How Tamil Marriages Are Celebrated In Chennai?

Chennai Marriage Brokers

Like all other southern states of India, Tamilnadu is also a state with a predominantly Hindu population. The marriage rituals in Tamilnadu are simple as well as traditional. Although the social media era has brought some changes in the mindset of people in choosing their partners, a majority of Tamil marriages are still arranged by the family members, thanks to the matrimony sites online. For instance, Chennai marriage bureau brokers online are expanding their services to cope with the never-ending demand for new brides and grooms over the years. The selection of a perfect bride or groom is followed by various traditions that are in practice since ancient times. Tamil marriage can also be divided into pre-wedding and wedding ceremonies. These rituals are explained below.

Pre-Wedding Rituals in a Tamil marriage

Panda kaal muhurtham is the starting point of a Tamil wedding. Both the family members will gather up to do prayers to God seeking a new good life for their children. This is usually done one day before the wedding. This is a ritual of welcoming the groom to the bride’s family. A pooja along with a coconut breakage is done.

Sumangali Prathna – This is a ritual in which all the married women in the bride and groom’s family who are leading a good married life are asked to bless the bride to lead the same pleasant married life with the groom.

Engagement – This is the official confirmation of the marriage done either at a temple or at any of the houses with all the family members present. The individual consent on the marriage of all the relatives will be asked. Anyone in the family can raise their objection for the marriage if any. Mostly there won’t be any objection, but it is followed as a tradition.

Mangala Snanam – In this ritual, both the bride and the groom will be bathed at their respective houses with turmeric paste and other holy liquids to purify them on the wedding day.

Kaashi Yatra – This is a mock activity done by the groom pretending to go on a pilgrimage to Kaashi to become a permanent bachelor leaving all his responsibilities behind. When he starts his journey, the bride’s uncle will convince him to stay back and get married.

Oonjal ceremony – In this ritual, the bride and the groom with garlands are made to sit on a swing and the family members will provide banana and milk to each of them.

Wedding

The Tamil wedding act is very simple that only a priest will be chanting slogans sitting before a sacred fire. The groom gets to the stage (mostly in a Mandap) and waits for the bride to arrive. The bride is taken from the makeup room to the stage by her cousins and friends and allowed to sit beside the groom. The “Thali” or “Mangalyam” is placed on a coconut in a plate with some rice and sent over to get blessings from the guests and the guests will take rice and flowers for “akshathai”. Then the groom ties the Thali around the bride’s neck and the couple takes seven rounds around the sacred fire to complete the marriage.
